Indeed, with hardship comes ease: How Al-Saadi’s Tafsir Opens the Door to Hope in Surat Al-Sharh

English versionالعربية

In moments of distress, a person’s perspective can narrow until they see nothing beyond the hardship immediately before them. But the Quran reshapes this perspective, connecting believers to God’s promise and mercy. Among the most eloquent verses expressing this meaning are God’s words in Surat Al-Sharh:

﴿فَإِنَّ مَعَ الْعُسْرِ يُسْرًا ۝ إِنَّ مَعَ الْعُسْرِ يُسْرًا﴾

Surat Al-Sharh, verses 5 and 6.

A Quranic Promise at the Heart of Hardship

Sheikh Abd al-Rahman ibn Nasir al-Saadi explains these two verses as a great promise of good news: the existence of hardship does not mean that the doors of relief have closed. Rather, ease accompanies and coexists with hardship. The meaning highlighted in the tafsir is that hardship, no matter how great, is not the end of the road, and that God creates alongside it the means of ease and relief.

Al-Saadi draws attention to the significance of the Quranic wording in the repetition of the two verses: the word “hardship” appears with the definite article, while “ease” appears indefinite. In his tafsir, he states that this conveys a powerful meaning of hope, and the expression that one hardship cannot overcome two eases became well known among Quranic commentators. Al-Saadi also connects this meaning to God’s words in Surat Al-Talaq: ﴿سَيَجْعَلُ اللَّهُ بَعْدَ عُسْرٍ يُسْرًا﴾, reinforcing the meaning that hardship is not a permanent condition.

Why Does the Quran Say “With” Hardship?

One meaning worthy of reflection is that the two verses do not say that ease comes only after hardship has ended. Instead, they use the expression: “with hardship.” This opens a broader perspective for believers in understanding trials: the means of relief may be taking shape at the same time a person is experiencing hardship, even if its results have not yet become visible.

This does not mean that every problem will disappear immediately or in the way a person expects, nor that believers do not grieve or suffer. Rather, the Quran trains the heart not to confine the future to the difficult present moment, and to combine patience, action and a good opinion of God.

The Context of Surat Al-Sharh

The two verses appear in a surah conveying meanings of reassurance and reminders of blessings. The surah begins with God’s words: ﴿أَلَمْ نَشْرَحْ لَكَ صَدْرَكَ﴾, then mentions the lifting of the burden and the raising of the Prophet’s mention, before presenting the repeated promise of ease with hardship. At the end of the surah comes practical guidance: ﴿فَإِذَا فَرَغْتَ فَانْصَبْ ۝ وَإِلَى رَبِّكَ فَارْغَبْ﴾.

This context brings hope and action together. Ease is not a call to abandon the means or wait for relief without striving. Rather, believers do what they can, work diligently in obedience and turn their hearts toward God.

How Can We Live the Meaning of the Two Verses?

These verses can become a practical approach to facing crises: we should not judge the future based on a single moment of distress, we should look for the available avenues of ease and continue pursuing legitimate means. Ease may come in the form of solving the problem itself, strength that God grants a person to deal with it, or an opportunity for good that opens up from where they do not expect.

The two verses also teach us that hope in God is not a denial of reality, but a faith-based way of dealing with it. A person sees hardship as it is, but does not see it as separate from God’s power, mercy and promise of ease.
