Three Saudi Museums Celebrate 96th National Day, From the Kingdom’s Unification to Red Sea Memory

English versionالعربية

Three Saudi museums are opening their doors today, Wednesday, September 23, 2026, with special cultural programs marking Saudi National Day’s 96th anniversary. The celebrations transform national memory from static exhibits into interactive experiences bringing together history, the arts, music and local stories.

The programs include the Saudi National Museum in Riyadh, the Red Sea Museum and the Tariq Abdulhakim Museum in Jeddah. They are inspired by this year’s National Day identity, “Our Pride Is in Our Nature,” while each museum offers a distinct experience shaped by its character, collections and cultural story.

The National Museum: The Story of Unification Through an Interactive Experience

From September 23 to 26, the National Museum in Riyadh is presenting an interactive journey through multiple stations revisiting chapters of the Kingdom’s story and national identity. The experience begins with a shadow-theater performance exploring King Abdulaziz’s vision and the unification of the Kingdom, before visitors move on to stations focusing on influential national figures, the diversity of the Kingdom’s regions, and inherited symbols, customs and traditions.

The program is not limited to historical storytelling. The museum’s lobby will host live folk-art performances from various Saudi regions in cooperation with the Theater and Performing Arts Commission, alongside games, creative activities and experiences designed for families and children, making the visit more like a comprehensive cultural celebration.

The Red Sea Museum Tells Jeddah’s Story Through the Sea

In Jeddah, the Red Sea Museum is marking the occasion from a different perspective, one connected to the city’s history and relationship with the sea. Located in the historic Bab Al-Bunt building, the museum is hosting family activities and introductory tours exploring the building, its collections and stories connected to the Kingdom, Jeddah and the Red Sea.

The program coincides with the International Day of Sign Languages and includes a storytelling experience titled “A Nation’s Story,” accompanied by translation into Saudi Sign Language—an initiative that expands access to cultural content. The museum is also launching the “Mina’a Encounters” platform to support Saudi photographers, artists and emerging talents. Its first edition begins with an exhibition titled “Between Sea and Stone,” presenting Jeddah and its port through the eyes of Saudi photographers.

The Tariq Abdulhakim Museum: Music as Part of Memory

The Tariq Abdulhakim Museum in Jeddah is placing music at the heart of its National Day celebrations through workshops and interactive experiences for children and families from September 23 to 25, daily from 4 p.m. to 10 p.m. The activities aim to introduce visitors to Saudi musical traditions and give them an opportunity to participate practically rather than simply observe.

The diversity of programs between Riyadh and Jeddah reflects a trend toward making museums living spaces for engaging with history and culture, rather than merely places for preserving objects. On a National Day that recalls the story of the Kingdom’s unification, the three institutions offer different ways of interpreting identity: history at the National Museum, the city and the sea at the Red Sea Museum, and music and artistic memory at the Tariq Abdulhakim Museum.

National Day Culture Goes Beyond Traditional Celebrations

These events take place on the day the Kingdom commemorates its unification and the establishment of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia in 1932. The cultural program gives visitors an opportunity to connect the occasion with the stories of the people, places and arts that have shaped national memory, with content suited to family members and multiple age groups.

The program’s importance is also evident in its distribution between Riyadh and Jeddah and its use of local elements specific to each institution, rather than presenting a single, repeated version of the celebration. This gives visitors options ranging from political and social history to folk arts, photography, music and maritime heritage.
