Saudi inflation holds at 1.8% for fourth consecutive month as housing continues to pressure prices

English versionالعربية

Saudi Arabia’s annual inflation rate held steady at 1.8% in August 2026, remaining at the same level for the fourth consecutive month, according to data released by the General Authority for Statistics on Tuesday, September 15. The figure reflects the continuation of relatively limited price growth, as housing costs and related services remained among the main sources of pressure on the consumer price index.

According to the data, reported by Reuters citing the authority, the consumer price index rose 0.1% in August compared with July, while annual inflation hovered around 1.7% to 1.8% for much of the year.

Housing and related services lead sources of pressure

August data showed that the housing, water, electricity, gas and other fuels category recorded an annual increase of 3.9%, compared with a 4.2% rise in July. Despite the slowdown in this category’s increase, it remains an important factor in assessing price movements in the kingdom.

Housing costs are particularly important when analyzing inflation because they represent a recurring item in household budgets. Movements in rents and essential services can also affect the perceived change in living costs, even when the headline inflation rate remains stable.

What does inflation stability at 1.8% mean?

The rate remaining at 1.8% for four consecutive months indicates that overall price pressures have not broadly accelerated in recent months. However, a stable headline figure does not mean that all goods and services are changing at the same rate. The consumer price index combines a large number of items with different weights, so some categories may rise more quickly while others remain stable or decline.

From an economic perspective, the inflation reading provides important insight into the direction of purchasing power, operating costs and domestic demand. Investors and companies also monitor this data when forming expectations about costs and prices, particularly in sectors affected by rents, energy and services.

Limited monthly increase in August

On a monthly basis, the consumer price index rose 0.1% in August compared with July. Monthly comparisons help show more recent changes, while the annual reading measures price levels against the same month of the previous year.

August’s data were released at a time when global markets are seeing differing inflation trends among major economies, making local indicators essential to understanding the state of the Saudi economy beyond external volatility alone. For consumers, the details within the index remain more important than the headline figure, as inflation’s impact varies according to spending patterns and the share of income allocated to housing, food, transport and other services.

Monitoring upcoming data

Upcoming readings will determine whether the current stability extends into the following months or whether new changes emerge in the components of the index. Housing costs remain one of the indicators worth monitoring, after the category covering housing, water, electricity, gas and fuels recorded an annual increase above the overall inflation rate in August.
