129 Missing and 6 Dead After Passenger Ship Capsizes in Indonesia as Extensive Search Underway in Java Sea

Indonesian authorities are intensifying search-and-rescue operations in the Java Sea after the passenger ship Virgo Transport 8 capsized while traveling from Surabaya in East Java to Banjarmasin in South Kalimantan, in one of the country’s largest maritime transport accidents in recent times.
According to the latest toll reported by Reuters and the Associated Press, citing the Indonesian search and rescue agency, 243 people were aboard the vessel. A total of 108 people have been rescued, six others have been confirmed dead, while 129 people remain missing. The figures remain subject to updates as the search continues.
High Waves and Difficult Weather Conditions
Reports said the vessel encountered bad weather and waves reaching about 3 meters in height, causing it to list and then capsize in waters near the Masalembu area. The ship had left Surabaya en route to Banjarmasin before losing contact with the relevant authorities.
Authorities said the accident occurred while sea conditions were turbulent, making it difficult to reach the site and hampering some underwater search efforts.
More Than 600 Personnel Involved in the Search
Indonesian authorities expanded the rescue operation, with hundreds of personnel from the search and rescue agency, navy, coast guard, police and local authorities taking part. The operation includes ships, helicopters, aircraft and diving teams, as well as monitoring and water-survey equipment covering the waters surrounding the accident site.
The Indonesian armed forces also announced that a number of ships, aircraft and helicopters were taking part in support of the joint operation, with the aim of expanding the search area and speeding up efforts to locate the missing.
Ship Remains Capsized at Sea
According to reports, the vessel remained overturned, with part of it visible above the surface, while rescue teams focused their operations in the surrounding area and along nearby shipping routes where currents could carry survivors or debris.
Several survivors described difficult moments before the vessel capsized, while passengers’ families in Banjarmasin await any new information about their relatives.
Frequent Maritime Accidents in the Archipelago
Indonesia, which comprises more than 17,000 islands, relies heavily on ferries and ships to transport passengers and goods between the islands. This widespread reliance makes maritime transport safety a critical issue, particularly amid recurring accidents linked to poor weather, technical failures or operational safety challenges.
The causes of the Virgo Transport 8 capsizing remain under investigation, while the relevant authorities stressed that the current priority remains finding the missing and rescuing any potential survivors.
