Air Arabia begins operations from Dammam with five daily flights to Riyadh, Jeddah and Medina
The consortium led by Air Arabia has begun operations from King Fahd International Airport in Dammam, adding a low-cost operator to the domestic aviation network and expanding travel options from the Eastern Province. The launch follows the consortium—which comprises Air Arabia Group, Nesma Group and KUN Holding, with majority Saudi ownership—obtaining an Air Operator Certificate from the General Authority of Civil Aviation.
Three domestic destinations from Dammam
According to Air Arabia’s official announcement, the initial network from Dammam will serve three destinations in the Kingdom: Riyadh, Jeddah and Medina. The schedule includes two daily flights to Riyadh and two daily flights to Jeddah, in addition to one daily flight to Medina, bringing the total to five daily flights in the first phase.
The new operations represent a significant expansion of air connectivity for the Eastern Province, particularly with King Fahd International Airport serving as the operational base. Adel Al Ali, chief executive officer of Air Arabia Group, said the launch represented a strategic milestone in the group’s growth and reflected its commitment to expanding value-focused and affordable travel options within the Kingdom.
Operating certificate granted after regulatory requirements were met
The General Authority of Civil Aviation had granted the consortium an Air Operator Certificate after it fulfilled the regulatory and operational requirements related to safety, security and operational quality. The certificate is significant because it represents the regulatory authorization required for the new carrier to begin commercial operations from Dammam.
The entry of the new operator comes within the framework of Saudi Arabia’s aviation strategy, which aims to improve air connectivity, enhance airport competitiveness and expand the sector’s capacity, alongside the objectives of the National Transport and Logistics Strategy and Saudi Vision 2030.
Airbus A320 aircraft in operation
Air Arabia said the operations would use single-aisle Airbus A320 aircraft. The company will also provide passengers with its usual services, including the SkyTime streaming entertainment system, SkyCafe catering service and AirRewards loyalty program.
For his part, Mohammed bin Ali Al-Hassani, chief executive officer of Dammam Airports, welcomed the start of operations, saying the move reflected the growing standing of King Fahd International Airport and partners’ confidence in its operational capabilities. He added that it opened a new phase of expanding connectivity from the Eastern Province to domestic and international destinations.
What do the new operations mean for the Saudi market?
Economically, the entry of a low-cost carrier adds capacity and competition to the domestic travel market and could expand the options available to passengers traveling between Dammam and major cities. It also strengthens the role of King Fahd International Airport as a gateway to the Eastern Province, with the network potentially expanding later to international destinations in line with operational plans and the relevant permits.
The start of operations does not necessarily mean that prices will remain fixed or that seat availability will be the same on all flights, as airfares are subject to demand, booking times and the carrier’s policies. The significance of the move lies in adding a new operating option and frequent direct connectivity between Dammam and three of the largest domestic destinations.
