Gulf Cup 27 just around the corner: Jeddah prepares for its first hosting, while Saudi Arabia opens against Kuwait
Jeddah is entering the final countdown to the start of the 27th Arabian Gulf Football Cup, or “Gulf Cup 27,” which Saudi Arabia will host from September 23 to October 6, 2026. The tournament holds particular significance for both the city and the Saudi national team. For the first time in the competition’s history, Jeddah will host all the matches, while the Green Falcons will begin their campaign against Kuwait on Wednesday evening, coinciding with Saudi Arabia’s 96th National Day.
The tournament brings together eight Gulf teams in 15 matches, amid intensive organizational and fan preparations two days before kickoff. The matches will be played at King Abdullah Sports City Stadium and Prince Abdullah Al-Faisal Stadium, which will host the group-stage and knockout matches through to the final.
Saudi Arabia and Kuwait in a special opening fixture
According to the Arab Gulf Cup Football Federation, the draw placed Saudi Arabia in Group A alongside Iraq, Oman and Kuwait, while Group B consists of Qatar, the United Arab Emirates, Bahrain and Yemen. The Green Falcons will begin their campaign against Kuwait on September 23 at King Abdullah Sports City Stadium in Jeddah, on an evening that coincides with the Kingdom’s National Day celebrations.
The timing is expected to give the opening match additional fan momentum, particularly as the tournament is being held in Jeddah for the first time. The Gulf federation had announced that this edition will run through October 6 and feature 15 matches between the eight teams.
Jeddah to host the Gulf Cup for the first time
Gulf Cup 27 marks a new chapter in the tournament’s history, as Jeddah has never previously hosted the competition. When unveiling the official identity, the Gulf Cup federation said the tournament’s design was inspired by the details of Jeddah’s historic rawasheen, incorporating elements of Saudi identity and the city’s maritime character in an effort to connect the sporting event with its host location.
The hosting comes as part of a series of major sporting tournaments and events held in the Kingdom. The organizing committee said the stadiums, operational services, transportation and logistics had been prepared to receive the teams, fans and media.
15 matches and two groups on the road to the final
Group A matches begin with Iraq facing Oman and Saudi Arabia taking on Kuwait, while Group B action starts the following day. The teams finishing in the qualifying positions in the two groups will advance to the knockout stages, culminating in the final scheduled for October 6.
The Gulf Cup federation officially put tickets for the tournament on sale in August, explaining that fans could attend the group-stage and final-round matches through multiple pricing categories. The new edition is being closely followed given the importance of the traditional Gulf rivalry, as well as its significance as a key stage for the national teams ahead of upcoming continental competitions.
The Green Falcons face a start that allows no room for complacency
From a technical perspective, Group A appears competitive, with Saudi Arabia, Iraq, Oman and Kuwait, making the opening match against the Blue of Kuwait important in the qualification calculations. Home advantage and fan support will be among Saudi Arabia’s key assets, but the nature of the Gulf Cup and the history of its matches require each game to be approached on its own terms.
As kickoff approaches, attention is turning to Jeddah, which is preparing for two weeks of Gulf football in an edition that combines sporting competition with a celebration of the city’s local identity.
