Dina Mustafa makes history as first Saudi woman to win an Asian Games medal

English versionالعربية

Saudi karate athlete Dina Mustafa has written a new chapter in the history of Saudi sport after winning the bronze medal at the 20th Asian Games, “Aichi-Nagoya 2026,” in Japan, becoming the first Saudi female athlete to win a medal for the Kingdom in its history of participation in the Asian Games.

The achievement came in the kumite competition, following a closely fought bout against Nepal’s Arika Gurung in the third-place match. The Saudi athlete’s path was far from easy: she found herself three points behind before turning the bout around and securing an 8-7 victory in one of the أبرز moments of Saudi Arabia’s current campaign.

Thrilling comeback from behind to the podium

According to the Olympic Council of Asia, Dina Mustafa entered the bout against an opponent with extensive continental experience, as Gurung had previously reached the final of the Asian Games in Hangzhou. Nevertheless, the Saudi athlete remained focused until the decisive moments, turning a deficit into a historic victory that earned the Kingdom its first medal at the 2026 Games.

Speaking after the medal ceremony, Dina said, according to the Olympic Council of Asia, that she was happy to be the first Saudi woman to win a medal at the Asian Games. She described the bronze as being worth gold to her, an expression that reflects the scale of the personal and national achievement.

Double Saudi achievement in karate

Saudi Arabia’s karate medal haul did not end with Dina Mustafa’s bronze. Her teammate Saud Al-Bashir added another bronze medal in the men’s 60 kg category after defeating his Nepali opponent 2-0 in the medal bout, giving Saudi Arabia two medals in karate.

The Saudi Press Agency said Dina’s achievement was the first Saudi women’s medal in the Kingdom’s history of participation in the Asian Games, while the Olympic Council of Asia noted that her medal was Saudi Arabia’s first at the Aichi-Nagoya 2026 Games.

Why is the medal especially significant?

The value of this bronze extends beyond the medal standings; it points to Saudi Arabia’s growing presence in individual sports and the development of women’s participation at the continental level. The Kingdom is taking part in the Asian Games for the 12th time, with a delegation of 144 male and female athletes competing in 19 sports, according to Olympic Council of Asia data.

The achievement gives Saudi karate an important boost at a competition bringing together the continent’s elite athletes, while placing Dina Mustafa among the names that have reached historic milestones in Saudi women’s sport. The Aichi-Nagoya Games continue until October 4, 2026, leaving the Saudi delegation with further opportunities to add more medals.
